Our Day at Scottish Rite

Yesterday Beau had his first trip to our local Children's Hospital. This was a planned visit that was ordered by Beau's urologist to double check his kidney function.

Here we go! Beau is in the stroller in the parking garage ready to go inside! He isn't actually mad in this picture, just focused on playing with the straps in the stroller.

Once we got inside, we checked in at the general admissions area. Beau made himself comfortable by propping his leg up on dad's leg!

Next we went to the Radiology waiting room and filled out a little more paperwork.

Once we got to our room, Beau realized this wasn't so fun anymore!

I don't have pictures of the next several hours. The nurses really earned their money trying to get an iv set up in Beau. The first two times they thought they had good veins, but they both collapsed. Next, they got the iv in and were getting ready to give him fluids when all of the sudden his arm started getting really bloody. The iv had come out. After one more try, they paged the iv team. It took a while for the iv team to show up, so Beau fell asleep while we waited.

This is us waiting on the iv team. They put hot bags (not sure the technical name) on both arms and legs to try to help the veins come out or something. Notice Beau's sweaty head!! He had worked himself into a sweaty frenzy while they were trying to get the iv in for over an hour.

Luckily, the iv team was able to successfully get the iv started in his foot on the first try.

We walked around the hallway for a bit while Beau got fluids through the iv. Then we were taken back to the nuclear medicine room for his mag3 scan. Basically, they strapped him into this machine with velcro. He had a catheter inserted at this time and then they put a dye in the iv so that the camera could track his kidney function.

This is Beau ready for his first mag3 in the US. He actually already had this done in Korea, but his urologist wanted to confirm the results would be the same since the previous test was done at the beginning of 2011.

Beau cried for about half of the hour long scan and was calm the other half. We were so proud of him!! Luckily Raleigh and I got to sit next to him the entire time. There was a tv in the room with cartoons on, so that would occasionally distract him, but he doesn't have much of an attention span for watching tv.

After we left Scottish Rite, we went to the urologist's office and he reviewed the scans with us. Basically Beau's left kidney is not filtering and emptying. This is what the doctor had expected. He will have surgery to correct the UPJ blockage in his ureter sometime soon, but we don't know exactly when just yet.

Beau's urologist explained that the surgery will take a couple of hours and has a 90% success rate. We will stay one night in the hospital and then come home the following day if everything looks good. The only strange thing is that after surgery Beau will have a catheter for a week. I must have made a surprised face when the doctor said this because he was quick to tell us that it will be easy to care for and they will show us exactly what to do.

We are so thankful for the healthcare that Beau received in Korea and we're especially thankful for all of the times Beau's foster mom took him to the hospital for tests!

We are looking forward to having the surgery done so that hopefully Beau's left kidney will function a little better.

Once we got home, Beau crashed on the couch for about 2 hours.

He was in need of a good nap after working so hard all day!
