South Korea is not the only country grappling with the issue of orphan care. Around the world, there are more than 150 million orphans waiting for forever families to call their own.
There are many complex issues surrounding The Drop Box. Korea does not have "safe haven" laws like the US, so birth mothers have an extremely hard decision to make when wanting to relinquish their rights to parent. In the US, birthmothers can safely drop babies at hospitals, police stations, etc with no questions asked. This does not exist in Korea. Additionally, new adoption laws were written in 2012 which have dramatically increased the number of birth mothers using the Drop Box.
I have seen the movie and it will bring you to tears. It is a beautiful story of love...Pastor Lee and his wife are truly being the hands and feet of Jesus.
Another very amazing part of the story...
The film is directed by Brian Ivie. He was an aspiring college student in film school. He read an LA Times article about Pastor Lee and his ministry. He thought that creating a documentary about the drop box would be his "ticket to fame" or at least earn him in a spot in the Sundance Film Festival. He contacted Pastor Lee and asked if he could create the documentary. Pastor Lee replied that he didn't know what a documentary was, but offered that Brian was welcome to come live with him.
While creating the film, Brian became a Christian. Just another amazing part of the gospel being spread through God's work in Pastor Lee and his wife.
