He is at a really fun age and it is fun to watch his little personality develop. Beau loves to be around people and other little kids, but he is never the first one to jump in the middle of the action and be the center of attention. He is much more comfortable watching for a few minutes then joining the fun. He has gotten really good at waving and saying hi to other children at the playground and it is so cute.
He loves to be silly. He thinks it is hilarious if he looks at you out of the corner of his eye and then turns his head to look you straight in the eyes. He will just giggle and giggle. He still loves to play games like peek-a-boo. He is really attached to his teddy bear and stuffed puppy right now. Usually at least one of them tags along with us most places. He loves to pretend play with them and feed them, put them to sleep, etc. Just recently, he started wanting them to lie beside him as he gets his diaper changed. He still likes to ride his ride-on toys, play in his pretend kitchen, play piano (at Nana and Pipi's house), play with cars, and play outside. He doesn't have a huge attention span for coloring right now, but we still do it a few times a week. Beau loves to help cook! I usually pull up a stool to the counter and give him something to stir or mix and he is content to help. He loves adding the salt and pepper to meals.
Breakfast is really Beau's least favorite meal, and I hope I haven't made him that way because I have never been much of a breakfast eater. He loves having a sippy cup of milk when he first wakes up, so I think his tummy gets full on that. What I have found that works best, is to let him have a few choices in the morning. I leave it on a low table that he can reach and then he snacks on his breakfast as he plays. Right now he likes to have a banana, vanilla wafers, and he LOVES pecan spinwheels at Pipi's house. He also likes apples (but only whole, he will not eat them pre-sliced) grapes, and blueberries. He eats lunch and dinner in his high chair, but we are pretty laid back about breakfast.
Beau really likes the book I Love You Stinky Face right now. The phrase, "but mama, but mamma" repeats throughout the book and he will say "mama, mama" as we read each new page.
Beau just got new shoes and he is wearing size 5 1/2. He wore a 3 1/2 to 4 when he first came home, so his feet have grown almost 2 sizes in about a year.
He is wearing size 12-18 months in shorts/pants, but a size 18-24 months or 2T in tops (depending on how the brand is sized). I think most of his 18 month shorts from this summer will still fit him next year, but we will see. All of his shorts this summer had to be rolled at the waist to stay on. I can tell he is getting bigger though, so it will be fun to see how tall he is at his next check-up.
Beau is still drinking whole milk and he loves milk. If I poured him a glass of milk every time he asked for one, I think he would drink a gallon of milk every couple of days! I guess we better start stocking up for when he is a teenager!
I think all of his fall/winter pajamas from last year will be too small, so it will be fun to pick out a few new things. We have gotten almost all his pj's at Costco. They have great Carter's pjs for $9.99 that come with a shirt, pants, and shorts. Also, our Costco occasionally gets in Hanna Anderson pj's so hopefully they will get a shipment of those soon!
We went through a little stage where Beau would whine/cry when he got his teeth brushed, but thankfully that is over. He happily opens wide now. :) Raleigh is the primary teeth brusher. We sing this song while brushing and Beau likes the routine of it all.
A new adventure is starting this week, because Beau is starting preschool! That's right! After much prayer and contemplation, we have decided to give it a try! Since Beau doesn't have older siblings to watch and learn from, we think it will be great for him to have peers to play with on a regular basis. We do get together with friends a lot for play dates and we will continue to do that as well. He will go to school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for about 3 hours. Drop-off in the mornings is between 8:45-9:15 and afternoon pick up starts at 11:45. We are expectantly praying that God will give Beau a peace that passes all understanding as he starts school and is away from me and Raleigh. There are only 12 students in his class with 2 teachers and all of the kiddos turned 2 in June, July, or August. I have talked to the teachers and they know to call me if he is still upset after a certain amount of time and I will pick him up. I want to set Beau up for success, so I would rather him only stay a portion of the time each day until he gets comfortable staying the whole time. Hopefully he will love it and want to stay the whole three hours, but just in case we have a back-up plan.
Beau has learned a lot of new words in the last month or so.
At 24 months, his words were dada, mama, wawa, mimi, nana, uh-oh, rock, bye, hot, walk, spoon, and a few other word approximations.
Now at 26 months old, his new words are:
-hello (Raleigh is really good at
getting him to say this when they are being silly.)
-hi
-on (Sounds like short vowel o
sound. Doesn’t quite finish the
/n/ ending sound. He says this if
he needs helping turning a toy on.)
-Pipi (What he calls my dad.)
-no
-bye bye (He was saying bye at 24
months old, but now he puts two together and says bye bye.)
-book
-pepper (as in salt and pepper…I
seriously think he learned the word from watching this video. He also loves to help in the
kitchen. Most evenings, he stands
on a step stool at our kitchen counter and adds the salt and pepper to our
meals. His version of the word is pretty clear and I think anyone would be able
to understand it.)
-more (Sometimes he will just say
more, and sometimes he will sign it and say it at the same time. I think this was the first word where he added the final consonant sound.)
-one more (When I leave his room at
bedtime, I usually say “one more” and give him one more kiss. Then when we spent a week visiting my
dad’s doctor, he started asking for one more sucker. I guess this is Beau’s first 2 word phrase.)
-roll (as in let’s roll the ball or let's roll on the floor)
-ball
-door
-please (This is very new and he is
saying /pee/ for please. I know it
is missing a few sounds, but it is a start.)
-eat (Sounds just like eat, without
the final /t/.
-two (One of the verbal routines I do
with Beau is count 1, 2 as I buckle the two snaps in his carseat. During the verbal routine, I stopped
after saying 1, and he said 2. Then
when we were at Nana and Pipi’s house, Nana taught him to say two when someone
asks how old he is.)
-go (We’ve been using the verbal
routine “ready, set, go” a lot. We
also use this vocabulary lots of times a day when Beau is playing with little
cars or driving a riding toy.
Often I will say, “Go, go, go, stop” or “go car go.” He has picked up this word through
these routines. I don’t think his
articulation of /g/ is perfect, but you can tell he is saying go.)
-stop (Similarly to the word go, the
articulation is not perfect, but you can tell he is saying stop.)
-new animal noises: dog (arf) cat
(meow) duck (quack) cow (moo) sheep
(baa)
-bubble (This is also another word where he is correctly saying all of the sounds. He includes the final /l/ sound.)
-door
-cheese (Raleigh says it sounds like
/chee/.)
-down
-puppy (He replaces the final /ee/
sound with /u/.)
-teddy (He still just says /t/ for
teddy. If he wants his teddy or
can’t find it, he will start saying /t,t,t,t,t,/ emphatically until you help
him find teddy.)
-Bible (We were actually at church when he said this the first time. The preacher said to get out your Bibles, and Beau said "bible." He knows which books are his Korean and English Bibles and he likes to look at the pictures.)
I'm sure I am forgetting a few, but this is what I can remember right now.
One of the main things I have noticed
is that Beau is much more interested in making word attempts. He will imitate sounds and mimic silly
noises. It seems like everyday he is making more word attempts. There are lots of words he tries to say such as playground, drink, school bus, etc. I know what he is saying, but other people probably wouldn't understand him. While I know he is still behind in his expressive language, he is making progress and so I think he is doing great! Even if he wasn't making progress, we would love him just the same.
Testing out a tricycle! We are thinking he might be just the right age/size for this!
Nothing but smiles at the playground!
He looks like such a big boy!
Trying a frozen yogurt for the first time! Despite the confused look on his face, he actually did like it.)
